Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi lo starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming collection of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha hi lo.
