Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players often get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complex at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, and many battling for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
