Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and lost most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.
The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often wager against each other. He was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
