Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed taking part in various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and headed to New York to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into several of the greatest minds in chess. Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker.
