Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved playing various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.
The real advancement in his abilities began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often compete against one another. He was able to access a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
